Dublin CODING School is delighted to introduce Akhil Ravindran, our new Lecturer in Web Development. Akhil is currently a Full Stack Engineer at Microsoft and has 7+ years of industry experience. Akhil holds a Masters’s Degree in Computer science from University College Dublin
We asked Akhil about his career so far and his advice for someone considering a career in Web Development;
What first attracted you to Web Development?
I was always intrigued with computers and technology which drove me toward programming. With Website development, I get the opportunity to solve complex problems, which gave me an opportunity of seeing the world from another perspective.
What does a day look like in your company working in?
I start my morning with a cup of coffee and check my emails before going into a scrum meeting which is basically a collaborative meeting discussing our current work. My primary work includes developing javascript SDKs for front-end application and their integration into various Microsoft products. What I love about my job is it poses a different challenge daily and that drives and motivates me further.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Web Development?
If you are curious about things and you like to solve problems then Web development will be really interesting for you. You will get to solve problems for a variety of products which impacts people very much. The best way to learn is to get your hands dirty and start building something.
Why is Web Development so crucial in business today?
In today’s world where everyone is so dependent on the Internet, Web development is the medium that everyone uses to get services or products. Every business needs a website to convey its goal to its customers. Web development plays a major role in successful business marketing. Without it, it would be difficult to leave your mark on a global level.
What are the advantages of studying IT?
IT offers a huge variety of career opportunities. It offers you the opportunity to learn your way and also keeps you motivated and challenged since the technology keeps refining continuously. It also offers you an opportunity to work remotely.
Why age is not a boundary to changing a career path?
It’s better late than never. Age shouldn’t be a deciding factor for changing careers, especially going into IT. This won’t need any special skills other than a keen interest in solving problems and building something. Hard work, perseverance, and continuous learning will make the path much easier.
What are the main feelings every person experiences while changing career paths?
Changing careers can cause insecurity in multiple ways, especially in a financial sense. One can also think of not utilizing the knowledge gained in the existing career. But one must always look at the bigger picture and strive for excellence. The experiences gained are life experiences and they will be put to use at the right time.
