Dublin CODING School is delighted to introduce our new Lecturer in Data Analytics, Ray McDonncha. Ray is a Senior Data Analyst at American online retail giant Wayfair.
Wayfair Inc. had revenues in excess of $14 billion in 2020. Their digital platform offers more than 14 million items from more than 11,000 global suppliers, so plenty of data to analyse!
We asked Ray about his career so far and his advice for aspiring Data Analysts….
What first attracted you to Data Analytics?
When working as a Team Leader, part of my role involved reporting on my team’s performance. This is where I first learned the basics of spreadsheets and calculating metrics, and soon realised I had a natural aptitude for pulling insights from data.
What does a Data Analyst’s day look like in your company?
I really depends on your department and team, but typically it involves pulling data from databases using SQL or some other database tool, looking for interesting insights into a business problem, and putting your conclusions together to share with your stakeholder, while making sure you are documenting your work carefully so it can be reproduced.
What advice would you give to someone consider a career in Data Analytics?
A critical aspect of the role is being able to manage relationships with your stakeholders, the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and being able to work with ambiguity. To be truly successful as a data analyst, you will need to work on developing these skills with as much attention as developing your technical abilities.
Why is data so important in business today?
Informed decisions are always better than uninformed decisions. If a business has data available to them, then every effort should be made to take advantage of its ability to empower strategy and decision making.
You can hear more from Ray during our online event ‘Exploring the Role of the Data Analyst’ on Wednesday 31st of March at 6pm
